Why I started a goHighLevel Agency at 72
Why I Started a GoHighLevel Agency at 72 Instead of Retiring
Retirement wasn't supposed to look like this.
Like many Americans, I spent my life believing that if I worked hard, earned an education, served my country, and dedicated my career to helping others, retirement would eventually bring financial freedom.
Instead, at 72 years old, I found myself asking a different question:
"How can I build another income stream that creates value, serves others, and finally helps me eliminate my remaining student loan debt?"
That question led me to start my own GoHighLevel (GHL) AI Automation Agency.
The Student Loan Crisis Doesn't End at Retirement
A recent article fromThe Independenthighlighted a growing problem that many people don't realize exists.
More than3 million Americans age 62 and older still owe federal student loans. The average Baby Boomer borrower owes more than$42,000, and many are delaying retirement—or returning to work—because of that debt. Some even face the possibility of Social Security garnishment if they default.
When I read that article, I realized something.
I wasn't alone.
I spent years investing in higher education because I believed education would create opportunities.
It did.
I earned:
A Bachelor of Science in Mathematics
A Master's Degree in Education
A Doctorate in Educational Leadership
Those degrees allowed me to spend nearly two decades helping students succeed in mathematics and computer science while serving schools across California.
They were worthwhile investments.
But they also came with student loan debt that stayed with me much longer than I ever expected.
My Career Was Successful
I've been fortunate.
I served 20 years in the United States Marine Corps.
I became an educator.
I was honored as an Amazon Future Engineer Teacher of the Year.
I retired after helping hundreds of students graduate.
Yet retirement brought new financial realities.
Like many retirees, I experienced a significant reduction in monthly income.
Health changes, inflation, and the rising cost of living meant that simply "being retired" wasn't enough.
I didn't want another job.
I wanted another business.
Why GoHighLevel Changed Everything
Throughout my career, I've always loved solving problems.
When I discovered GoHighLevel, I didn't just see software.
I saw a business opportunity.
I saw a platform that could help small businesses automate repetitive work while allowing me to continue doing what I've always enjoyed:
Teaching.
Instead of teaching Algebra, I now teach business owners how AI can:
Capture leads automatically
Respond instantly to prospects
Book appointments 24/7
Follow up without forgetting anyone
Build marketing systems that continue working long after business hours
The more I learned, the more I realized something important.
Small businesses don't need more software.
They need systems.
Why I Chose Real Estate Agents
As I began building my agency, I looked for an industry where automation could immediately create measurable value.
Real estate stood out.
Agents often spend thousands of dollars every month generating leads.
The real problem isn't always getting leads.
It's following up consistently.
Many opportunities are lost because agents are:
Showing homes
Meeting clients
Negotiating contracts
Driving between appointments
Trying to answer every phone call themselves
AI changes that.
Today, I help real estate professionals build automated systems that generate leads, nurture prospects, book consultations, and keep conversations moving—even while they're with clients.
You're Never Too Old to Reinvent Yourself
People often ask me,
"Why would you start a business at 72?"
My answer is simple.
Because experience is an asset.
I spent decades learning how people learn.
How systems work.
How organizations improve.
How technology changes behavior.
Those skills didn't expire when I retired.
If anything, they're more valuable today than ever before.
Age doesn't disqualify you from innovation.
It gives you perspective.
Retirement Can Become Reinvention
Many people think retirement means slowing down.
For me, retirement became an opportunity to build something that aligns with my values.
Today I'm combining:
Education
Artificial Intelligence
Real Estate
Business Automation
Coaching
Consulting
into one business that helps others grow while creating recurring income for my family.
My Mission Today
I don't simply sell software.
I help business owners build systems.
I teach them how AI can save time, improve customer service, and create consistent growth without adding more hours to their day.
At the same time, I'm proving something to myself.
It's never too late to learn a new industry.
It's never too late to start a business.
It's never too late to reinvent your career.
And it's never too late to create the financial future you still want.
Final Thoughts
If you're approaching retirement—or you're already there—and wondering whether it's too late to build something meaningful, I hope my story encourages you.
Your experience has value.
Your knowledge has value.
Your ability to solve problems has value.
Technology hasn't replaced experience.
It has amplified it.
At 72, I'm not slowing down.
I'm building.
And if I can learn AI, build an automation agency, and help businesses grow, I believe many others can do the same.
