How to Reduce School Tardiness: AI Strategies That Improve Student Attendance
How Schools Can Reduce School Tardiness: Why AI-Powered Interventions Are the Future of Student Attendance
Student tardiness has become one of the most persistent challenges facing schools today.
Every late arrival represents more than a missed bell—it means lost instructional time, disrupted classrooms, additional work for attendance staff, and missed opportunities to connect students with the support they need.
Most schools already knowwhois late.
The real question is...
How do we intervene early enough to change the outcome?
That's the question that inspired our new four-part video series and the launch of theEducator Innovation Sandbox.
Schools Don't Have an Information Problem
Schools collect attendance data every day.
We know:
Which students are chronically absent
Which students arrive late
Which classes have the highest tardy rates
Which families need support
Yet despite all of this information, many schools continue to struggle with student attendance.
Why?
Because information alone rarely changes behavior.
Intervention does.
A Conference That Changed My Perspective
Recently, I attended theGrounds for Innovation Conference, where I listened to a presentation by educatorJason Slowbe, a former President of the California Mathematics Council.
He shared examples of schools using educator-built applications to improve attendance and school culture.
One high school reduced annual tardies from25,429 to 6,963—a72.6% reduction—through a practical intervention system developed by educators. Other schools also reported substantial improvements in attendance and school culture using similar approaches.
The presentation reinforced something I've believed throughout my career:
The people closest to the problem are often the closest to the solution.
That idea became the foundation for theEducator Innovation Sandbox.
What Is the Educator Innovation Sandbox?
The Educator Innovation Sandbox is a collaborative initiative that helps educators design and build practical AI-powered solutions to real school challenges.
Instead of waiting for software companies to create another attendance program, we're empowering educators to build solutions tailored to their own students, staff, and communities.
Schools can develop AI-powered tools for:
Student tardiness
Chronic absenteeism
Parent communication
Student engagement
Attendance interventions
Teacher productivity
School culture
Student support
This isn't about replacing educators.
It's about giving educators better tools.
Why Continuation and Alternative Schools?
We're beginning with continuation and alternative schools because these campuses have long been leaders in innovation.
Their work requires:
Strong relationships
Personalized interventions
Flexible learning environments
Family engagement
Creative problem solving
Those strengths make them ideal partners for building and testing practical AI solutions that can eventually benefit schools across California and beyond.
The Four-Part Video Series
To introduce this vision, we've created a four-part educational series.

A Vision Bigger Than Attendance
Reducing school tardiness is only the beginning.
Imagine schools building AI-powered solutions for:
MTSS interventions
PBIS supports
Parent engagement
Student advising
Teacher assistance
Classroom communication
Credit recovery
College and career readiness
Now imagine those solutions being shared with educators across the country.
That's the long-term vision of the Educator Innovation Sandbox.
Innovation shouldn't happen only inside technology companies.
It should happen inside our schools.
Let's Build the Future Together
The future of education won't be built by artificial intelligence alone.
It will be built by educators who understand students, recognize challenges, and are willing to create better solutions.
If you've ever looked at a problem in your school and thought,
"There has to be a better way."
This is your invitation.
Let's stop waiting for the future of education.
Let's build it together.
